Is a Mikumi day trip from Dar es Salaam worth it?
Yes, if you are short on time. Mikumi is roughly 280–300 km west of Dar es Salaam, about five hours by road each way, so it is a long day that starts before sunrise. In return you get several hours of game drives in a real national park. Our Mikumi Day Safari costs from USD 185 per person and includes transport, park fees, a guide and a picnic lunch.
Why Mikumi National Park works for a day trip
Mikumi covers more than 3,000 square kilometres and is one of the largest national parks in Tanzania. Its heart is the Mkata floodplain, an open grassland where animals are easy to see from a safari vehicle. The main Dar es Salaam to Morogoro and Iringa highway crosses the park, so the road journey is straightforward and you may see your first animals before you even reach the gate.
Unlike the famous northern parks around Arusha, Mikumi does not require a domestic flight. That is why it is the favourite choice for business travellers, expats, cruise passengers and anyone combining Dar es Salaam with Zanzibar.
A realistic Mikumi day-trip itinerary
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| About 4:30 AM | Pickup from your hotel or residence in Dar es Salaam. Leaving early avoids city traffic. |
| Morning | Drive west through Chalinze and Morogoro, with a short stop on the way and views of the Uluguru Mountains. |
| Late morning | Arrive at Mikumi, complete park registration and begin your first game drive across the Mkata plains. |
| Midday | Visit the hippo pool, then enjoy a bush picnic lunch in the shade of a baobab tree. |
| Afternoon | More game-drive time to look for elephants, giraffes, buffalo and lions before leaving the park. |
| Evening | Return drive to Dar es Salaam, arriving in the evening depending on traffic. |
Your guide adapts the route to where animals have been seen recently. Times vary with traffic and road works; we confirm your exact pickup time the day before.
Wildlife you can expect in Mikumi
Mikumi is known for relaxed, open game viewing. On a typical day trip, guests see many of these animals:
- Elephants (tembo), often near the waterholes
- Giraffes (twiga), Tanzania’s national animal
- Zebras, wildebeest and impala grazing together on the floodplain
- Buffalo (nyati) in herds
- Hippos (kiboko) at the hippo pool
- Lions (simba), which are regularly seen but never guaranteed
- Baboons, warthogs and eland, plus hundreds of bird species
Leopards live in the park but are shy, and rhinos are not part of a Mikumi safari. Want to impress your guide? Learn the Swahili animal names before you go.
Best time to visit Mikumi
| Months | Season | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| June – October | Long dry season | The best wildlife viewing. Vegetation thins out and animals gather near water. Cooler mornings. |
| November – December | Short rains | Short showers, greener landscapes and fewer vehicles. Game viewing is still good. |
| January – February | Short dry spell | Warm, green and photogenic, with plenty of young animals and birdlife. |
| March – May | Long rains | Lush scenery and quiet roads; some tracks can be muddy, so plans need flexibility. |
Mikumi is open all year. If you can choose, June to October gives the most reliable sightings; if you love birds and green scenery, November to April is beautiful.
