Mnemba Island Snorkelling: A Complete Zanzibar Dhow Trip Guide

Mnemba Island Snorkelling: A Complete Zanzibar Dhow Trip Guide

Turquoise water, coral gardens, sea turtles and pods of dolphins: a day at Mnemba Atoll is one of the most popular experiences in Zanzibar, and for good reason. The best way to enjoy it is the traditional way, on a wooden dhow with the wind in the sails.

This guide explains what Mnemba is, what you can see while snorkelling, how a full-day dhow trip works, the best time to go, what to bring and how to enjoy the reef responsibly.

Quick answer

Can you visit Mnemba Island?

You can snorkel and swim in the protected waters around Mnemba Atoll, but the small island itself is private and visitors on day trips cannot land on it. A typical trip combines a boat ride to the reef, one or more snorkelling stops, dolphin watching and lunch. Our Mnemba Island Dhow & Snorkelling Full-Day Tour starts from USD 70 per person.

What and where is Mnemba?

Mnemba is a small island surrounded by a large coral atoll off the north-east coast of Zanzibar, not far from Matemwe, Kendwa and Nungwi. The surrounding reef is protected as the Mnemba Island Marine Conservation Area, which helps keep the coral and marine life healthy. Visitors pay a conservation fee; please ask us whether it is included in your quotation.

Because the island is privately managed, all the action for day visitors happens in the water: shallow coral gardens, white sandbanks and some of the clearest water around Zanzibar.

What you can see while snorkelling at Mnemba

  • Sea turtles (kasa), especially green turtles grazing on sea grass
  • Dolphins (pomboo), often seen from the boat on the way to the reef
  • Colourful reef fish such as parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish and clownfish
  • Starfish, sea urchins and soft corals in the shallow gardens
  • Occasional rays and octopus (pweza) for sharp-eyed snorkellers

Wildlife is wild, so sightings change from day to day. Want to learn these animal names in Swahili? See our guide to Swahili animal and safari words.

Best time for Mnemba snorkelling

Mnemba can be visited all year. In general, calmer seas and clearer water are common from around October to March, while the period from June to September can be windier on the east coast. April and May bring the long rains and more changeable conditions. Mornings are usually calmer than afternoons, which is why trips start early. Your crew always makes the final call on safety.

What to bring on a Mnemba trip

  • Swimwear, a towel and a change of clothes
  • Reef-safe sunscreen and a rash vest or T-shirt to protect your back while snorkelling
  • Hat and sunglasses for time on deck
  • Waterproof phone pouch or action camera for underwater photos
  • Motion-sickness tablets if you are sensitive to boat movement
  • Cash for tips, drinks and any fees not included in your booking

Snorkelling and dolphin etiquette

Mnemba is beautiful because it is protected. Help keep it that way:

  • Never stand on, touch or collect coral, shells or starfish.
  • Keep your distance from turtles and never chase or ride them.
  • Let dolphins approach on their terms. Responsible crews do not chase or surround a pod with boats.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen and take all rubbish back to shore.
  • Follow the crew’s instructions about currents, boat traffic and where to swim.

Tips for beginners and non-swimmers

Many Mnemba snorkelling spots are shallow and calm, so beginners enjoy the trip too. Tell us in advance if you are not a confident swimmer so the crew can plan a suitable spot and give you a personal introduction to the mask and snorkel. Non-swimmers can still enjoy the sailing, dolphins, beach time and sunset from the dhow.
